My dear friend Mary from White Peach Photo contacted me asking if I’d like to be a guest blogger on her blog, White Peach. She asked me to share a post featuring a favorite location that I like to shoot at. As many of you know, I started my business shooting on the sunny beaches of San Diego, California. So this post may come as a surprise to you.
If you’ve ever heard anyone refer to, “The Lakes,” they may have been talking about either Lake Calhoun or Lake Harriet in Minneapolis. Both are fairly heavily populated during the summer months as they offer that nature escape in the heart of the city. They also offer several convinces such as sailing, paddle boarding, entertainment snacks and many other things we all love to indulge in. I’ve found that they aren’t as crowded during the winter months, which is one reason I love shooting there. Now, if you know me, you know that I am not a fan of the cold, snow, ice or winter for any reason. But I must say that an engagement session after a fresh snow fall is the one thing that will get me out of my cozy warm house.
Last winter I had the pleasure of shooting Gabi & Jack’s engagement session at Lake Calhoun; a place they often visit during the summer months. Not only is it fairly deserted, but the lake is pretty shallow. This makes walking out on the ice a little bit less nerve racking. During their session we spent some time under the bridge, which you can’t do in the summer (at least not without a boat). That spot alone provided a variety of textures, angles and yummy soft light. There was also a fair amount of tree coverage along the path to add some nice contrast and variety to the session. So, as the snow begins to fall in the coming months, don’t fear the brisk temperatures that would drive most to shoot indoors. Instead, consider booking your next winter session at lake Calhoun after a fresh snow fall. It’s worth it!
